Planning a trek to the Annapurna region? The ABC trek is one of the most popular routes in the Himalayas for good reason. Here is everything you need to know before you lace up your boots.
1. How difficult is the ABC Trek? We rate this trek as Moderate. You don’t need technical climbing skills, but you do need stamina. The trail is famous for its stone steps—thousands of them! The days involve 5–7 hours of walking. The maximum altitude is 4,130m, so while altitude sickness is a risk, the gradual ascent helps most trekkers acclimatize well.
2. The Best Time to Go
- Spring (March–May): Warmer weather and blooming rhododendrons make the trail colorful and vibrant.
- Autumn (Sept–Nov): The clearest skies and best mountain views. This is the peak season for photographers.
3. Accommodations & Food You will stay in “Teahouses”—simple family-run lodges. Expect twin beds, shared bathrooms, and a warm dining hall. The menu is surprisingly diverse, offering everything from the power-packed Dal Bhat (lentil soup and rice) to pasta, pizza, and apple pie.
4. Permits & Regulations Don’t forget: As of recent regulations, trekking with a licensed guide is generally mandatory in this region. You will need an ACAP permit and a TIMS card, both of which we handle for all our guests.
